FAQ

Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions people ask most about Jotry.

Do I need an account?

No. Install Jotry and start writing. Even Backup & sync works without an account: your devices hold the keys, and a 24-word recovery key stands in for a password.

Does Jotry work offline?

Completely. Writing, history, search, notebooks and export all work without a connection. Backup & sync catches up the next time you’re online.

Which phones does it run on?

Android 9 or later, and iPhones with iOS 17 or later.

What happens if I lose my phone?

With Backup & sync on, set up Jotry on your new phone and use your 24-word recovery key, or join from another device that already syncs, and your notes come back. Without Backup & sync, your Android notes come back with an end-to-end encrypted Google backup (see Privacy). On iPhone, notes are kept out of iCloud backups, so turn on Backup & sync or export your notes regularly.

Can Jotry read my notes?

No. Without sync, they never leave your phone. With sync, they’re encrypted on your phone before they leave it, and the keys stay on your devices.

Can I use Markdown?

Yes, though you don’t have to. Every note is stored as Markdown, you can paste Markdown and it becomes formatting, and you can export everything as .md files and import them back.

How much history does Jotry keep?

A version for every minute you spend writing a note, for the life of the note. Restoring an old version never removes the current one.

Is Jotry free?

Writing, notebooks, history, search, sharing to Jotry and Markdown export are part of the app. Backup & sync runs on a server, so it will be an optional subscription, bought in the app. Export will never be a paid feature, so your notes are always yours to take.

Which languages does it speak?

English (US and UK), Spanish, German and Russian. Jotry follows your phone’s language, or the language you pick for Jotry in your phone’s settings.

Is there a desktop version?

A desktop app is being built, and on a Mac it already joins your sync group. Windows and Linux will follow.
